The Grade II listed townhouse at Castelnau in South West London has been enhanced with a contemporary extension that complements its Regency heritage.
Alex Tart Architects specified the Proteus HR honeycomb rainscreen system in Copper with a Distressed Patinated finish, chosen for its rich, aged character. The surface introduces depth and texture, creating a subtle dialogue with the building’s historic fabric. By combining flat and curved panels, the façade achieves a fluid geometry that highlights the system’s precision and versatility.
Brass detailing marks key junctions and architectural features, unifying the material palette and linking the new extension to the classical townhouse. The result is a design that balances bold modern lines with the enduring charm of the original structure.

The performance of the façade was as important as its appearance. Proteus HR was selected not only for its ability to deliver the complex curved geometry with accuracy, but also for its durability and technical credentials. Its modular design, incorporating integrated corner location brackets, ensured a consistent, high-quality finish across every surface. Tested in accordance with EN13501-1, the system achieves a fire classification of A2-s1, d0. Proteus HR also offers full demountability, recyclability, and a low-maintenance finish, providing a solution that balances long-term resilience with architectural ambition.
Installation was carried out by J&PW Developments using a direct-fix method onto a timber substrate. Alignment and stability were carefully managed throughout, supported by on-site guidance and training from Proteus. Despite the challenges of curved panels and bespoke detailing, all components were manufactured to exacting tolerances, ensuring a precise and high-quality result.
“This project highlighted the versatility of the Proteus HR system. Working with curved geometry and bespoke details required close collaboration, but the result shows how contemporary design can sit harmoniously alongside historic architecture.”
Josh kuriakose, Project Manager at Proteus Facades.
The extension at Castelnau demonstrates how Proteus HR can bring contemporary design into dialogue with historic architecture, enhancing the character of a listed property without compromise. By uniting precision engineering with thoughtful material selection and skilled installation, the project delivers a façade that is both striking in appearance and enduring in performance, setting a clear example of how modern interventions can complement heritage buildings.
